The tuatara is one of the oldest inhabitants of the new land created by Maui and as such it is held in great respect.Ā It is a master of concealment and regarded as the ugly/scary progeny of Punga - son of Tangaroa the god of the sea. Tuatara were feared because of their appearance and as such were regarded as a guardian figure.
Carved from treated and polished domestic cow bone.
